*Elder-1790 Maine, Cumberland County line 7 (Reuben and Saml Elder in the two previous lines) Isaac Elder 2 males 16 and over 3 males under 16 2 (? hard to read) females (all, no age stated) analysis, according to my information on this family; my guess is that this Isaac Elder refers to the senior Isaac Elder (b. 1738, d. 1796) he would be about 52 or 53 in 1790 |

*Elder-Memoirs of the Elder Family married MARY HUNNEWELL and moved to the twon (sic) of GORHAM about 1765 and owned the first plastered room in the town, about one mile north of GORHAM CORNER on the so-called Queen Street. In the years 1777 and 1778, GORHAM had filled her quota of men in the Revolutionary War, when GEN. BURGOYNE marched from Montreal to Vermont and New York when there was a call for more men and the town voted to pay eight dollars per month and maintain the families. The enlistment was for three years and grandfather volunteered. He was in the battle of Bennington, Vermont, under GEN. STARK and the three days' battle and the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga, N.Y. He served the full three years. He died at the age of 68." |

*Elder-P. P.-Portrait & Bio Record of.... Franklin County Kansas Publication: Chapman Publishing Company, 1899 and a pioneer of 1857 in Franklin County, was born in Somerset County, Me., September 30, 1823, a son of Isaac and Mary (Quint) Elder. The Elder family is of Scotch-Irish lineage. In an early day some of that name crossed the ocean from the north of Ireland. From 1717 they were identified with the history of Cumberland County, Me. There the paternal grandfather was born and reared, and from there he accompanied a company of soldiers to engage in the service of his country during the Revolutionary war. As a private in General Stark's army he endured all the hardships and perils incident to that memorable struggle. In the battle of Bennington he was wounded in one eye, but with that exception escaped unharmed. |
