no.80 on chart had d.o.b. as 1776, changed to 1777 per NEHGS bible record possible place of birth is Windham?, see *Elder-Windham in the past - his parents were there when he was born. children and dates of birth are in question, see *Elder-Memoirs of the Elder Family. Which child was Katherine Gilman's? More than one? Then Mary Quint would have had 3 children from March 1809 to ca 1811, when David Elder was born. need to look into... can't find Isaac (3) in 1800 census. Looked in Gorham 1800 census records. *Elder-P. P.-Portrait & Bio Record of.... Franklin County Kansas Publication: Chapman Publishing Company, 1899 and a pioneer of 1857 in Franklin County, was born in Somerset County, Me., September 30, 1823, a son of Isaac and Mary (Quint) Elder. The Elder family is of Scotch-Irish lineage. In an early day some of that name crossed the ocean from the north of Ireland. From 1717 they were identified with the history of Cumberland County, Me. There the paternal grandfather was born and reared, and from there he accompanied a company of soldiers to engage in the service of his country during the Revolutionary war. As a private in General Stark's army he endured all the hardships and perils incident to that memorable struggle. In the battle of Bennington he was wounded in one eye, but with that exception escaped unharmed. Born and reared in Cumberland County, Isaac Elder removed from there to Somerset County and cleared a farm in the midst of the woods. In addition to agricultural pursuits he engaged in the lumber business for many years. He continued to make his home in Maine until his death, which occurred in 1848, at seventy years of age. His wife, who also spent her entire life in Maine, was the daughter of a Revolutionary hero, who took part in the battle of Bennington and other engagements. In a family of eight children, all of whom reached mature years, the subject of this article is the only one now living. One of his brothers, Alva, who was a soldier in a Maine regiment during the Civil war, came to Kansas in 1868 and died in Franklin County in July, 1898. |
